Collectables

This is such a vast subject it is difficult to know where to begin. I suspect that many collectors have actually got into collecting without the real intention of doing so. It could be that a part or whole collection has been inherited and then developed further by the recipient. Others may have been given a present of what turns out to be a collectable item and this triggers the desire to make further additions which then form the basis of a collection.

For those who would like to become a collector, but are unsure what to embark on, it could be an idea to purchase one of the Collectables Price Guides. Miller is a name to look for and a typical guide will have 500+ pages crammed with coloured pictures and typical prices that the collector can expect to have to pay.

Care is needed in choosing a collecting topic because prices may preclude the individual from ever achieving the ambition of a total or representative selection of items.

Over the years, many things that would have been consigned to the rubbish bin are now highly desirable collectors items. Wouldn't the benefit of hindsight be a desirable attribute today. I now remember items in my childhood (1940s-50s) that were commonplace in the home, but are now highly desirable to collectors. How many of us kept our Dinky cars in pristine condition still in the box they came in?

One of the most interesting aspect of collecting is that it is still possible to pick up items at relatively low prices at jumble sales, car boot sales, etc and it might be worth reading the section on Buying and Selling to be found on this web site.

Unfortunately for the collector, when it gets to some of the more difficult pieces needed, the dealers may have stepped in and already acquired these. It may therefore still be necessary to attend general or specific antique and collectable fairs to buy from the dealers present. Most antique centres and shops will probably be able to show some collectable items, but the distinction becomes more apparent there between antiques and collectables.

The following is a list of some of the areas of interest that the budding collector may wish to consider, but it should be remembered that this is nowhere near an exhaustive list of all the possibilities:
